Goalball
On March 1st, 2018 Christian's class took a field trip to Turnstone. Turnstone is a facility that empowers people with disabilities to achieve their highest potential by providing comprehensive services and programs. Christian's class is doing a Read A Thon as a fund raiser to help support Turnstone, so they kids got to go there to see just what exactly they do to help individuals with disabilities. This hit a bit close to home for me because of Cameron, so I made a point to chaperon this trip because I was also curious just what Turnstone was all about. The kids listened to a presentation on the different services that are offered and what sorts of equipment is available to assist those with disabilities be able to still play sports competitively, then they went on a tour of the facility and finally they learned how to play Goalball. Goalball is played by two teams of three blindfolded athletes attempt to throw a ball with bells inside into their opponent's goal net. This fast-paced game requires strength to throw the 2.75-pound ball and speed to defend the goal. Athletes play both offense and defense. The kids took turns learning how to pass, block and shoot the ball. Then they got a chance to play a game against each other while blindfolded.
