Christian's Science Fair Project

This was the first year that the Koepke household has experienced the Science Fair.  $th grade is the first time that kids are required to participate in the science fair at school.  Christian decided to do his project on building a battery out of coins.  He did all of his own research, then Dan helped him do his experiment over Christmas break, then I helped him write his report and put together his project board.  Due to our insistence, his project was completed a week or two early and he volunteered to present to his class early to earn extra credit.  Dan helped him practice his presentation and get the timing down pat.  He ended up earning 110% on his project.  Then a week later he presented for the Science Fair at school.  Much to our amazement he was awarded regional alternate for the 4th grade at the school Science Fair.  The school is only able to send one kid from 4th grade and one alternate.  Christian was the alternate and was fortunate enough to get to go to the regional science fair on March 4th.

At the Regional Science Fair Christian presented his project to two sets of judges, then as asked to stick around for round 2 of judging and presented his project to another 3 sets of judges.  We weren't able to be at the awards ceremony when they announced his placement due to his basketball game being at the same time, but we were told later that he got second place in the region was was given a $50 check from IEEE.  He was disappointed that he didn't get to go on to State, but overall he blew us all away with how well he did and he learned really quickly how much he enjoys presenting to a crowd.
